Fillers

Facial fillers are substances that are injected into the face to treat wrinkles and undesirable contours (such as thin lips). They can be either permanent fillers, semi-permanent (last a few years), or temporary (last 6-12 months). Almost all are composed of substances normally found in the skin.

Who is a good candidate?

The ideal candidates are women and men who have either:

  • Deep wrinkles that do not respond well to Botox (such as nasolabial folds)
  • A desire to improve the shape or size of their lips
  • Contour abnormalities such as depressed scars or areas of fat loss
    (such as below the eyelids).
  • How do fillers work?

The fillers are composed of substances normally found in skin or bone. They are usually injected into the skin (dermis), however the more permanent fillers are injected into the deeper layers below the skin.

Which fillers do you offer at the Kryger Institute?

There are many fillers on the market. Not all are appropriate for patients and all situations. You will have to meet with one of our surgeons to determine which filler is right for you. Some of the more commonly used fillers at our office include Restylane, Juvederm, Radiesse, and Sculptra.

Will I look like a different person?

Absolutely not. Fillers can help mask flaws or irregularities in the skin. The idea is to make you look younger and not to make you look like a different person.

How long does it take to work and how long does it last?

The results are seen immediately. There is some swelling that can make things look "over-corrected," but this goes away in 24 to 48 hours. Sometimes a repeat treatment is necessary. The amount of time it lasts depends on the location and the type of filler. In general, fillers used over parts of the face that move a lot (such as the lips) last less (4-6 months) than fillers used in areas with very little movement (such as the nose).

    Who should not use fillers?

Anyone who has had an allergic reaction to any filler in the past, or who has an allergy to any substance contained in the filler is not a good candidate. Talk to your surgeon at the Kryger Institute to find out if which filler is right for you.

    How painful are the injections?

There is a small amount of pain associated with the injections. Therefore, numbing medicine is routinely used. The surgeons at the Kryger Institute are very skilled with nerve blocks used for injecting facial fillers. These blocks significantly reduce the pain associated with these procedures.

    What about redness and bruising?

Redness and bruising are minimal and generally resolve within 24 to 48 hours.

What restrictions are there after treatment with facial fillers?

There are no restrictions after treatment with fillers.

What if I have a problem? When should I call the office?

The Kryger Institute welcomes calls from patients. If you have any concerns at any time, please feel free to call our office. If it is an emergency, the answering service is available 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays. There is always a plastic surgeon on call. Your surgeon will discuss all the risks and potential complications with you before surgery. You will receive detailed instructions about situations that warrant a call to the office.
