How Can I Get My Panniculectomy Covered by Insurance?

Side view of a woman holding excess belly fat

I get this question frequently, especially from patients who have lost a significant amount of weight: Will insurance cover a panniculectomy?

The short answer is: sometimes.

A panniculectomy removes the hanging apron of excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen. Unlike a [tummy tuck], which is generally cosmetic and may tighten the abdominal muscles and reshape the waist, a panniculectomy may qualify for insurance coverage when the excess skin is causing a documented medical problem.

If you have hanging abdominal skin causing recurrent rashes, irritation, infections, or difficulty with daily activities, come see us. We can evaluate you and review your insurance plan’s requirements.

Serving patients from Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village, Calabasas, Ventura County, the greater Los Angeles area and nation wide.

What Does Insurance Look for Before Covering a Panniculectomy?

Insurance requirements vary by plan, but medical necessity usually needs to be clearly documented.

The procedure code commonly used for panniculectomy is CPT 15830. Documentation may also include diagnoses such as excess and redundant skin (ICD-10 L98.7) and intertrigo (ICD-10 L30.4) when appropriate.

Insurance carriers may look for:

  • An abdominal pannus that hangs below the pubic area
  • Recurrent rashes, chafing or infections beneath the skin fold
  • Several months of documented medical treatment
  • Prescription topical or oral medications when appropriate
  • Front and side photographs documenting the pannus
  • Photographs with the pannus lifted to document the affected skin
  • Stable weight, particularly following major weight loss or bariatric surgery

The exact requirements depend on your individual insurance policy.

Is a Panniculectomy the Same as a Tummy Tuck?

No—and this distinction matters for insurance.

A panniculectomy primarily removes excess hanging skin and tissue from the lower abdomen.

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is a cosmetic body-contouring procedure that can remove excess skin while also tightening the abdominal wall and improving the shape of the abdomen and waist.

Insurance may cover a medically necessary panniculectomy while considering the additional tummy-tuck portion cosmetic.

For patients interested in more extensive body contouring, procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck or body lift may also be discussed separately based on your anatomy and goals.

What About Panniculectomy After Weight Loss?

Patients who have experienced significant weight loss sometimes develop an abdominal apron that causes persistent skin irritation or infection.

Some insurance plans require your weight to remain stable for a specific period before considering coverage. The requirements following bariatric surgery or medical weight loss can also vary by insurer.

This is why we recommend checking your specific policy rather than assuming a procedure will—or will not—be covered.

Can We Help Determine Whether Insurance May Cover It?

Yes.

At the Kryger Institute of Plastic Surgery in Thousand Oaks, we can evaluate patients from Los Angeles, Calabasas, Westlake Village, the Conejo Valley and throughout Ventura County who are dealing with excess abdominal skin after weight loss, pregnancy or other body changes.

Bring any records documenting treatment for rashes, infections or other problems caused by the abdominal skin fold. We can review your situation and your insurance requirements before determining whether authorization for panniculectomy may be appropriate.

If your primary goal is a flatter or more sculpted abdomen rather than treating a medical problem, we can also discuss cosmetic options such as a tummy tuck, liposuction or another body contouring option.
