Who is a good candidate?

The ideal candidates are women and men with fair complexions and dark hair. The hair follicle is destroyed by this intense energy, and the contrast in color between the hair and the surrounding skin helps to prevent trauma to the skin.

Who is not a good candidate?

People with very light skin with light hair, or very dark skin with dark hair, are not good candidates. Patients who have a history of cold sores (oral herpes simplex infection) must take prophylactic anti-herpes medication (such as acyclovir) before undergoing laser hair removal.

How does laser hair removal work?

Laser hair removal uses a laser to target the roots of hair beneath the surface of the skin. The hair follicle is damaged or destroyed by light energy, and the hair eventually falls out. While it is not guaranteed to be permanent, a majority of patients do experience permanent hair removal after a series of treatments.

Which types of laser hair removal do you offer at the Kryger Institute?

There are many different lasers used in hair removal. At the Kryger Institute, an 810nm diode laser is used for fast hair removal. We also offer hair removal with IPL. It is advisable to schedule a consultation to see if you are a good candidate for hair removal.

Is laser hair removal performed in the office?

Yes, hair removal is performed in the office, and you can return to work the same day.

How painful is laser hair removal?

The procedure is usually described as feeling like a rubber band being snapped on the skin. A topical numbing ointment may be applied prior to the procedure to minimize any discomfort.

How long does it take to work and how long does it last?

Laser hair removal targets hair that is in the active growth phase. It takes about 7-10 days for the hair to release from the follicle. This may appear as if the hair is growing more quickly until it falls out. As long as you keep to the scheduled series of treatments, you have a good chance of achieving a permanent result.

What do I have to do after the laser hair removal treatment?

It is important to avoid sunlight to the treatment area until any redness fades. You should wash the treated area and pat dry for 3 days after treatment. Do not scrub. Also, you should avoid any hair removal products or services (such as waxing, electrolysis, or tweezing) that will disturb the hair follicles in the treatment area.

What if I have a problem? When should I call the office?

The Kryger Institute welcomes calls from patients. If you have any concerns at any time, please feel free to call our office. If it is an emergency, the answering service is available 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays. There is always a plastic surgeon on call.
